June DEADLINE APPROACHING w/$Cash Awards and Times Square feature

Apply June Online Group Show

There is only one week left before we close the applications for our June group art show "Home." See below how to submit your art.

In old English, the word ”home” refers to a town or a place where many souls gather.

The modern definition of home states that home is “the abiding place of the affections” which perfectly sums up how most people today regard their homes.

When we are born, our first impression of home is the place our parents made for us.

As we grow and leave that home, we start to build our own ideas of what home is. The majority of us end up building a home that is very different from the one we started our life journey in, whether it be a new apartment, house, town, or community.

Artists have a long history of documenting the places they call home. Claude Monet painted the gardens at his Giverny home, Helene Schjerfbeck painted family members and events that took place at her home, and Andy Warhol photographed his studio ”the factory” in New York City.

So we can conclude that the concept of home is universal, in the end, we end up creating a home that is unique to us.

This time in our June online group art show we celebrate artworks depicting the concept of homes. We welcome artworks from all mediums of visual art, except Abstract art, AI-created art, and video/film.

★ Digital entries must be received by May 28th, 2023 before 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time.

HMVC Gallery New York's tips for Artists

One of the most difficult things for an artist to do is to get a gallery to sign them.

The fact is that galleries are a business with a strong sense of aesthetics and values, arranging an exhibition is very expensive and for many IRL galleries, it’s also a gamble.

According to Artsy.net and Artbusinessnews.com galleries prefer to sign artists who have been recommended to them by other artists. 51% percent of galleries reported that they prefer to have a pre-existing relationship with an artist before they sign them. This is also called the ”Presentation effect” person who stays in the peripheral view of the boss is more likely to receive more opportunities than the one who works from home and is never seen. This is how most galleries operate, they want to see YOU, not just your work. While many artists prefer to let their work speak for them, unfortunately, this is not going to cut it. So what can you do to improve your chances of being signed by a gallery?

👀 Follow the gallery’s submission guidelines to the letter. If you don’t see one on their website, pay them a visit and introduce yourself, ask a staff member how the gallery likes things done. Calling is always an option too.

👀 Show up for events. As we mentioned, ”relationships” is the keyword here. Most galleries host weekly-monthly events. Show up, introduce yourself and talk to your peers and shower them with your support. Let everyone see and hear you.

👀 Your social media is part of your portfolio. The majority of galleries surveyed said that a strong online presence, including consistent social media and web promotion of your work and shows, could help you get in the door as an unknown artist. Regardless of your number of followers, how you manage your social accounts and present your work matters. Because this shows them that you understand marketing. After all, you will be in a partnership with them and both parties are expected to row the boat.

So get yourself out there and do what all the winners are doing, cultivating relationships in the industry.

But to all the introverted artists out there 44% percent of galleries surveyed said that they look for artists on Instagram too 😉 How’s your Instagram game going?
